Welcome
The Bujinkan is the name for the organization that houses 9 distinct ryuha (martial art lineages) including the worlds last authentic schools of ninjutsu. This organization is headed by Soke Masaaki Hatsumi and is based in Japan with branch schools all over the world. Though the public commonly refers to the art as simply ninjutsu, the schools actual name is Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu (Warrior God Body Movement). Ninjutsu refers to only part of the art, Samurai Bujutsu being the other. With these two distinct philosophy's of the Ninja and the Samurai the Bujinkan practitioner has a unique way of dealing with conflict. By using the whole body as a weapon the Bujinkan practitioner is able to generate power from movement instead of strength. We are not considered a "soft style" or a "hard style" Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu is a system of flowing from one moment to the next using all of ones surroundings as a weapon. Sometimes called the "martial art of distance" we respect and use the distance, not just between ourselves and our opponents, but also between nature and our environment.
Training in the Bujinkan is focused on the natural movement that makes our art unique, and highly effective, known as taijutsu. From this movement the practitioner learns Koshijutsu (pressure point, muscle attacks/tears and joint dislocations), Koppojutsu (bone breaking), Jutaijutsu (throwing, grappling, ground fighting), Dakentaijutsu (strikes), Happo Bikenjutsu (various modern and traditional weapons), Ninpo and Ninjutsu ( acrobatics, tactics and evasive strategies). The training in the Bujinkan is traditional, with a safe, non competitive atmosphere, and an emphasis on survival. This is the same training used by the Ninja and Samurai century's ago to refine skills that would be used to defend their lives in any situation despite age or size.
An important characteristic of traditional Japanese martial arts is the direct line of transmission from one Soke (lineal head) to another. The Ninja and Samurai lineages of the Bujinkan are all under the direction of Masaaki Hatusmi, Soke of these nine ryuha that comprise our art. Every generation one person is chosen as Soke to inherit there respective art. This is the person who best exemplifies the warrior characteristics that the art possesses. That person is given the Densho (written secrets) of the art containing its history, techniques, strategy, philosophy, and lineage. It is up to the Soke to ensure the survival of the art and to keep the art effective for the changing world. Soke Hatsumi was given this title from his teacher Toshitsugu Takamatsu (The last Combat Ninja), the 33rd soke of Togakure Ryu. With this responsibility Soke Hatsumi formed the Bujinkan organization to ensure these 9 lineages were properly passed on to future generations.
